Bass Cover #197: OBERER TOTPUNKT - Sie sind da

Sometimes when I get bored playing my usual covers I take a song I like that has no bass whatsoever and just write a bass part for it. No, it's not like this song needs a bass part, not at all! It's perfect as it is but no one forbids me to imagine “what if”, right? :)

Oberer Totpunkt is one of my favorite German electronic bands, plain and simple. Once upon a time, I was at a festival and I was really hungry and thought I could really use some decent lunch. During my lunch run, I passed one of the festival stages where Oberer Totpunkt was playing. I had no idea who they were but I forgot about everything, I just stayed there for the whole set. I knew the European dark electro scene, I knew what minimal electro music was, but OT was something completely new for me. Except for really catchy songs and an amazing visual show what caught me the most were quite creative live drums by Michael Krüger and of course the voice of Bettina Bormann. She didn't really sing, it was more like reciting poetry along with the music and it was so right for this band and for these songs! It was extremely captivating, I must say.

“Sie sind da” (“They are there”) is from the band's very first album and it's one of those softer and mystical tracks (OT has a lot of much heavier songs). It's not really challenging for a bass player because the song simply doesn't require a lot of notes. Complexity isn't important here, screw that I just like this song and I thought it could have a bass part like this. I hope I didn't ruin it too much :)

And I hope you'll check out this band, especially if you're electro-underground-tolerant :)
